ffs
Can't we just agree as a society that evolutionary psychology should have the intellectual credibility of intelligent design?

I LIKE THIS SUPERPOWER. let's say there will also be no derailing of misogyny discussion with men's feelings or homophobia discussion with straight people's feelings!

Also, everyone gets a pony.

This is an excellent policy. Today a dude in one of my classes told me that "women invented war, right after they invented agriculture!" Thanks for the info, time-traveler.

WE DON'T KNOW ANYTHINGGGGG. IT DRIVES ME SO FUCKING CRAZY. A paucity of data is not grounds for a MORE generalizing theory, for Christ's fucking sake.

Even if I had no other objections to it, I think my bullshit-antennae might possibly go up at the way evolutionary psych always seems to COINCIDENTALLY justify the exact social situation and beliefs and worldview of the theorist himself. PURELY BY COINCIDENCE, YOU UNDERSTAND.

AAAGHHHH THAT IS ONE OF THE ONES THAT DRIVES ME SO CRAZY. Oh and also it's especially DAUGHTERS that look like their dads, because obviously dads want to stick around for sons, I MEAN COME ON THEY HAVE PENISES, and so they need EXTRA motivation to stick around for lame girls and their lame girl vaginas.

Yeeeah, I can't say for sure on that one, because my brain is still having THIS argument:

"Psychology is the study of human behaviour and is a Good Thing."

"But all behaviour ultimately comes down to neurological functions, so neuroscience is the way to go."

"But but but PEOPLE THINK! Can't we study how their minds operate?"

"No. 'The mind' is a social construct. It doesn't exist."

"Then how do people react to anything based on memories, experiences, learning, etc.?"

"With BRAIN CHEMICALS. Can't do nothing without brain chemicals. Can't even come up with a construct of 'the mind." I WIN."

"But but but I like cognitive behavioural psychology. :("

"BRAIN CHEMICALS, DAMMIT!"

...so yeah, when I've decided whether or not to throw out psychology entirely, I'll get back to you on the finer points. (p.s. This is not me saying "don't be a psychologist!"; this is me saying "maybe I should be a neuroscientist." ANY PSYCHOLOGISTS OUT THERE, PLEASE DON'T HIT ME, I LIKE YOU. :( )

Oh, I really strongly feel like the mind and the self are things worthy of study and understanding, because there's more than just brain chemistry going on there. Brain chemistry doesn't explain the way in which we construct meaning or the ways in which society constructs the individual. (And since when does "X is a social construct" mean "X doesn't exist"? Anything that has an effect on something else exists.) There's all kinds of good stuff in psychology that cannot be accessed by biology at all, and I can take all the antidepressants I want, but without talk therapy I don't get better.

EVOLUTIONARY psychology, on the other hand, is as scientific as the idea of a child inheriting a parent's broken leg.
